Hike in Mt Airy Forest

Yesterday we hiked a 4 1/2 mile trail in Mt Airy Forest. Mt Airy is the Cincinnati Park Board's largest park (approx. 40% of total CPB acreage) and the country's largest urban park.
Mt Airy's origins go back to 1911 when the park board bought 168 acres. Today the park encompasses about 1470 acres. Before it was a park this area was small produce and dairy farms.
The hiking trails in this park are designated by the US Department of Interior as a National Recreation Trail.
In 2006 this universally accessible treehouse was built in 32 days. Construction of the treehouse was a collaborative effort of the Cincinnati Park Board, Cincinnati Rotary Club, the Marvin Lewis Foundation and Home Depot.
The treehouse is 1500 square feet, including ramps and landings), is 14' in height and ramps are 6' wide. The expected life of this structure is 50 years.
Mt Airy Arboretum is another major feature of the park. The horticulturist for this park maintain over 5,000 plants of 1,600 species.
These same park employees have worked very hard at maintaining bird and wildlife habitats. So much so that the Mt Airy horticulturists are designing Krohn's next show Backyard Birds and Wildlife which opens next Saturday.
